Botox® vs Facial Fillers – Which is Right for You?

The world of facial fillers can be confusing as there are so many options on the market. Botox® and fillers are both minimally invasive cosmetic treatments performed through injections.  And while they may seem similar, in reality they’re two very different things.

Botox®

Botox® is a treatment used on the face and neck to soften the lines caused by facial expressions and muscle movement. The treatment is a neurotoxin that works by blocking nerve signals in the muscles where it is injected. When those nerve signals are interrupted, the affected muscle is temporarily paralyzed or frozen. Without movement of these selected muscles in the face and neck, certain wrinkles are softened, reduced, or even removed.

Botox® only works on “dynamic” wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement, which are often referred to as “expression lines”. The most common areas that Botox® is used to address are the lines on the upper face, such as the “11” between the brows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Botox® is not a permanent treatment; the duration of results is variable between individuals but ranges from three to four months.

Facial Fillers

When we’re born, we have plentiful amounts of hyaluronic acid in our body, but as we get older this diminishes, leaving the skin less supported, and lines, sagging skin and wrinkles develop. Facial fillers use hyaluronic acid to restore age-related volume loss in the temples and cheekbones, fill in static, deep-set wrinkles around the mouth and plump the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness, and adds volume.

Lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding subtle volume, facial fillers can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving you a fresher look. Fillers are FDA-approved to last between 6 months to 2 years, depending on the type and area of injection. There is an enzyme in our body that naturally breaks down the hyaluronic acid molecules in filler over time, which is why it doesn’t last forever.

It is important to the staff of Timeless Skin Solutions that our patients have all the right facts, and are properly educated when it comes to injectables. We pride ourselves in being in the top 1% of injectors in the United States, and love seeing satisfied patients day-in and day-out. These treatments are quick, cause very minimal discomfort and downtime, and are used in specific and accurate ways to help our patients achieve natural looking results.
