IPL FAQ’S

Get answers to your most pressing questions about this specific treatment. Here are a few that we hear most often:

HOW SHOULD I CARE FOR MY SKIN BEFORE AND AFTER MY TREATMENT?
How long is an IPL appointment?

Depending on the treatment area, your appointment will last between 15 and 30 minutes.

Who will perform my IPL treatment?

Your treatment will always be performed by a physician.

Will it hurt?

Each time the pulses of light are delivered to your skin you will feel a mild and temporary stinging sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. This sensation will dissipate quickly. Your physician will take necessary measures to decrease any discomfort you may feel.

Is it safe?

Intense Pulsed Light therapy is very safe when performed by trained physicians. It is not, however, appropriate for all skin types. Because the laser works by sending wavelengths of light through the skin to target pigment, patients that are deeply tanned or have skin of color are generally not considered appropriate candidates. You can discuss this with your medical provider at the time of your consultation and other treatment plans can be recommended to arrive at the same results, safely. It is also important to note that if you have had sun exposure or used a tanning bed within a 4 week period pre or post treatment, you risk possible pigment changes or blistering.

What should I expect?

During the 15- to 30-minute treatment, expect a bright light followed by a mild and temporary stinging sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. This sensation will dissipate quickly and your physician will take necessary measures to decrease any discomfort you may feel. Following treatment you can resume your daily activities immediately. Pigmented spots will usually darken and eventually flake off, however, they should not affect your work or social schedule.

When will I start seeing results?

We usually recommend 4 to 6 treatments, spaced 3 to 6 weeks apart to achieve optimal results. Results are seen gradually after each treatment. You will see results after the first and subsequent treatments.

How long do results last?

Once desired results are achieved, we usually recommend patients follow a tailored skin care regimen to protect and prevent.  Since damage lies deep within the skin and doesn’t all come to the surface at the same time, maintenance treatments may be needed for new spots that appear. Many patients choose to select a maintenance plan that includes treatments every 6 months as a spring and fall clean up.

Will there be downtime?

No. Following treatment you can resume your daily activities immediately. Pigmented spots will usually darken and eventually flake off, however, they will not be noticeable nor should they affect your work or social schedule.

Are there any long-term benefits to doing Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatments?

Yes. Regular IPL treatments build collagen, give your skin an even tone and healthy appearance, and prevents further damage from presenting itself on the skin’s surface.

How much does it cost?

The cost per treatment varies based on the size of the area being treated. For the most accurate quote we recommend consulting one of our medical professionals to talk about your desired outcome. Treatment ranges in price from $185 and $655.

Am I a candidate?

If you have sun damage, unwanted freckles or spots, uneven skin tone, redness, rosacea, acne, acne scars, or fine lines, IPL is a very effective treatment. It is not, however, appropriate for all skin types. Because the laser works by sending wavelengths of light through the skin to target pigment, patients that are deeply tanned or have skin of color are generally not considered appropriate candidates. You can discuss this with your medical provider at the time of your consultation, and other treatment plans can be recommended to arrive at the same results, safely.
