Does Micro-Needling Hurt?

Micro-Needling is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a device with tiny sterile needles to create small wounds on the outermost layer of the skin. The skin’s wound-healing process stimulates collagen production to promote cellular turnover and resurfacing, leaving you with more skin elasticity.

While it is a safe, effective, and clinically proven dermatologic procedure, it’s a natural reaction to question, does Micro-Needling hurt and just how much?

First, let’s look at the benefits of Micro-Needling. The wounds created by the treatment prompt the deeper layer of skin called the dermis to rebuild itself without damaging the overlying epidermis. The treatment not only rebuilds the skin from the outside in, but also allows medications, nutrients, and skin care products to be absorbed deeper into the skin, which can further boost the treatment of a variety of issues.

Micro-Needling is a popular treatment choice for patients who desire clinical results, with little to no recovery, and is a valuable alternative to more invasive procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and deep chemical peeling. Micro-Needling is an effective treatment for a variety of concerns, including large pores, fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, acne, scars, rhytides, skin pigmentation issues, and rosacea. The treatment has limited side effects and minimal recovery time.

But does Micro-Needling hurt?

We are not going to lie, it does … but not a lot.

Our medical providers do everything possible to minimize discomfort. You will be prescribed a topical anesthetic (numbing cream) to apply to the treatment area which will significantly reduce any pain you may experience, and make the treatment quite comfortable. Bony areas on the face tend to be more tender than others and treatment around the nose can cause a tickling sensation.

To be honest, most individuals say that they do not consider the process to be painful. It can cause some discomfort but does not necessarily hurt. But we also know that pain is subjective and want you to be aware of what the treatment entails so it is as pleasant as possible.

As for what you should expect after the treatment, our medical providers will recommend a post-treatment product to optimize your results, such as SkinMedica’s Recovery Complex. You will also be directed to use a non-allergenic moisturizing cream and to stay out of the sun or to use a non-chemical sunblock of 30+ SPF for at least a week. You can resume the use of makeup and active skin care products after about 2 days.

Micro-Needling is most effective when done in a series of 3-5 treatments in intervals of 2-4 weeks.  Some patients elect to receive ongoing treatment sessions on an annual or semi-annual basis. Because Micro-Needling causes the skin to rebuild itself, this treatment is not a quick fix and it may take up to several months for patients to see the full results of the procedure.
