Myths about Botox + Filler

Fillers and Botox are two of the most popular treatments when it comes to diminishing facial lines and wrinkles, however they are still somewhat misunderstood. We’ve decided it’s time to set a few things straight when it comes to fillers and Botox myths, so we’re eliminating some common ones regarding these popular injectables!

1. Botox and fillers work in the same way.

MYTH – Botox and fillers are both injectables but they work in very different ways. A simple way to think about the two is: filler fills and Botox relaxes. Filler is commonly used to increase the fullness of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, and jawline. It fills in the deeper creases or folds in the skin and helps add volume to areas that have been affected by age-related loss of volume. Botox is commonly used in the upper portion of the face (forehead, crow’s feet, glabella) and works to reduce the movement of specific muscles that are causing wrinkles.

2. Botox immobilizes movement and emotions.

MYTH – If done correctly, and in proper moderation, Botox results look very natural. Timeless Skin Solutions is in the top 1% of injectors in the U.S., meaning we do this more than 99% of other medical offices that offer injections making our providers experts in the art of injections. We want our patients to remain expressive while reducing wrinkles in specific portions of the face.

3. Fillers are extremely painful when injected.

MYTH – Fillers can cause mild discomfort, however, some fillers such as JUVÉDERM® XC‎ and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC are formulated with lidocaine (a numbing medication) which can greatly decrease any pain that may be experienced at the time of the injection. In addition, Timeless offers comfort measures such as numbing cream, ice, and specialized injection techniques to minimize discomfort. Many patients rate their pain level, on a scale of 1-10, as a 2-3.

4. The results of filler are unnatural or dare we say even a little crazy-looking.

MYTH – At Timeless Skin Solutions we provide our patients with extremely natural-looking results. Although some people may notice you look refreshed, they most likely won’t know why! An important point to note: As with any type of cosmetic procedure, it is important to get treated by an experienced provider, with extensive knowledge, and experience using injectables. Injecting fillers and Botox is something the medical staff of Timeless does all day, every day. Choose the most experienced.

5. Juvederm and other hyaluronic fillers are not reversible.

MYTH – While fillers can last up to two years, we have the availability to reverse the effects of filler with an agent called hyaluronidase, which breaks down hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is what the dermal fillers at Timeless are composed of, so if for any reason you are unsatisfied, this treatment is absolutely reversible. But we’re confident you will be highly satisfied with your results.

6. Filler always causes bruising and will require downtime.

MYTH – Unless you develop severe bruising or excessive swelling, which is rare, you can typically jump back into your normal daily routine. It is, however, important to take precautions to avoid bruising; we recommend that our patients avoid taking St. John’s Wort, Vitamin E, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol, and fish oil supplements 3 days prior to treatment.

These agents may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Icing the area before and after your treatment can also be helpful in avoiding any potential swelling and/or bruising. You may also apply Arnica 3 times per day, 3 days prior to treatment, to help reduce the risk of bruising.

7. Sun Exposure will make the effects of filler fade faster.

TRUE – Studies show that exposure to UV radiation found in the sun degrades hyaluronic acid, which is what filler is made of. You can help prolong the effects of your filler by using sun protection on a daily basis. Even on overcast days, 40% of UV rays reach the earth.
Truth be told, sun exposure is the #1 cause of aging in the skin. Since Timeless Skin Solutions believes in healthy, beautiful skin, it’s no surprise we have many options for sunscreen available in our office. Some of our favorites include Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Brushes and SkinMedica’s Total Defense & Repair Broad Spectrum Sunscreen.

It is important to the staff of Timeless Skin Solutions that our patients have all the facts, and are properly educated when it comes to injectables. We pride ourselves on being in the top 1% of injectors in the United States and love seeing satisfied patients day in and day out. These treatments are quick, cause very minimal discomfort and downtime, and are used in specific and accurate ways to help our patients achieve natural results!
