Will a Chemical Peel Make Me Look Like Samantha from Sex & the City?

When it comes to Chemical Peels, I have always had visions of Samantha Jones from Sex and the City and her crazy red face experience after a “freshening” peel. You know the episode I’m talking about…

This picture of of bright red, flaking skin has unfortunately scared countless women away from the benefits of peels – to brighten the complexion and smooth out wrinkles. We are here to put all of those concerns to bed with the real scoop on our staff member’s less-than-terrifying chemical peel experience!

Kristy’s Peel Diary

While Allyson applied the chemical peel, I experienced a slight burning sensation. This was followed by itchy skin for several hours. I took a Zantac – yes the medicine for heartburn – to stop the itching. My skin was pink the day I received the peel, but by the following day, my skin looked pretty normal.

Day 3 and 4, my skin was peeling and flaking but the key is to have a moisturizer on hand that will hydrate and not further irritate the skin. I used SkinMedica TNS Recovery Complex. I am now on Day 5 and my skin looks glowy and radiant. I plan to make chemical peels part of my overall skin care plan!

Manda’s Peel Diary

My skin has been uncharacteristically broken out lately and I’ve been down about it. Allyson suggested that I do a SkinMedica Illuminize Peel to start out – a lighter, superficial peel that doesn’t make you shed all that much skin. It has alpha hydroxy acids, phytic acid and salicylic acid and then Allyson topped off the peel with retinoic acid to give it a boost and allow the chemical solution to penetrate more deeply and evenly.

Today is day 3 of my peel, and I’m still a little peely, but my skin is way smoother than before and all of my zits have dried up! This probably isn’t the peel for a more severe acne patient, but for someone who wants a quick pick-me-up, little downtime, and smoother, clearer skin, it’s definitely the way to go.

Allyson, Timeless PA-C Educates

Each month at Timeless, we provide staff education on one of our treatments, products, or dermatologic issues. Chemical peels are this month’s hot issue since everyone at the office is getting them!

What are the Benefits of a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are an effective treatment for a wide range of skin issues from smoothing fine lines and wrinkles to treating acne, mild scarring and sun damage. No matter your concern, you can expect a more youthful, refreshed and radiant appearance to skin texture and tone.

What Can I Expect?

A medical provider will wash your face before applying a topical solution to exfoliate the skin. Your face may feel tight and warm with a mild stinging sensation that quickly subsides. This peel application takes ten minutes or less – a quick lunchtime treatment!

This formula smooths the texture of the skin by removing the damaged outer layers. Depending on the type of peel, some patients experience peeling 3 to 5 days after treatment. Our pre and post-care support allow us to monitor your progress every step of the way.

After a single chemical peel, most patients notice an immediate improvement, but results are cumulative so the best benefits are seen after a series of chemical peels.

“Chemical” and “Peel” sounds scary! Is this damaging to my skin?

Quite the opposite! Don’t let the word chemical turn you away – the ingredients in these peels are derived from all-natural ingredients. And the flaking just means that your skin is healing – breaking down to build back even stronger! You can feel safe and confident in the hands of our highly-trained, physician-led practice.

Where Can A Peel Be Done?

Chemical peels can be done on the face, neck, chest and most areas of the body.

How Can a Chemical Peel Be Customized to My Skin?

There are different strengths of peels depending on your skin type and concerns. They range from mild to moderate levels – a light resurfacing to brighten the complexion with virtually no downtime to medium depth for acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and smoothing of lines and wrinkles.

The only mistake Samantha made was her “impulse purchase” right before a big event. The medical providers at Timeless can help you decide on the perfect level of peel for your skincare goals and the amount of downtime your schedule allows!
