My Intro To Columbus Skin Care

I have been with the Timeless Skin Solutions a little over 2 months now and already I feel like a whole world of skin care has been opened up to me. I never knew there was so much out there to keep our skin healthy and shining. So far, I’ve had three experiences that will keep me coming back for more. And this is from someone who thought she didn’t need anything!

  1. I did have some brown spots on my face, so I received my first IPL ever and loved it. Because IPL sometimes needs to be done in a series, I only noticed a huge difference after my second spot treatment. The results amazed me; my brown spots from sun damage over the years disappeared and are now completely gone.
  2. I also had a chemical peel so that I could see what it was like and discuss it with patients. I peeled for approximately 2-3 days after but I didn’t mind a bit. My skin was smooth and fresh after the peeling stopped, and I thought that it was well worth the results.
  3. The third change I’ve made to my skin is starting the Obagi product line. I’ve found that these products really make my skin glow and shine.

I’ve received so many compliments from family and friends noticing a difference in my skin. Being 42 years old, I love hearing this!  I’m already contemplating what’s next. I think I’ll be adding TNS Essential Serum by SkinMedica into my daily regimen. Mary Beth refers to this as “Youth in a Bottle.” Sounds good to me!

Exercise Your Skin

“What should I be doing to maintain and improve the look of my skin?”

We hear this question quite often.

This same question is presented to many doctors as, “What should I be doing to stay healthy and in shape?”

We all know that, at the very least, we should exercise and eat right just to maintain our current health. If we are trying to improve, we might amp up our workout and really cut down on the calories. I know from personal experience that I get flabby and unhealthy if I do nothing.

Well, it’s important to think of skincare the same way. In the simplest of terms: use it or lose it!

  • The Clarisonic Brush = Your Daily Workout: Your skin’s ability to exfoliate itself is like your metabolism; at some point, it just slows down. This means we don’t exfoliate naturally as we did in our younger days and need to do it manually. The Clarisonic Brush is the perfect solution. It removes dead skin along with the dirt and oil trapped underneath and allows your skincare products to penetrate 60% deeper.
  • Cleanser and Toner = Fruits and Veggies: You wouldn’t eat a cherry-flavored candy and count it as a piece of fruit. In the same way, you shouldn’t think of your skincare products as beneficial to the skin unless there’s data and evidence proving they are. This is why we sell medical-grade skincare lines like Obagi and SkinMedica. These products should be the building blocks of your skincare regimen; they have scientifically proven ingredients that can actually transform your skin at the cellular level, restoring healthy function to your skin cells. You’ll see a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots, as well as improved overall texture and tone.
  • TNS Essential Serum = Your Personal Trainer: That’s right, your skin can have its very own personal trainer. SkinMedica’s TNS Essential Serum contains 11 products in-one, taking your skincare to the next level. Vitamin C, peptides, and antioxidants all work together throughout the day/night to tighten and tone the skin.

So if you’ve fallen off the horse, get back on! Just like eating well and exercising, you have to continue your regimen to see results. And if you’re looking for the P90X equivalent in skincare, you may want to ask us about Titan, Pearl or IPL.

FAQ With Allyson

After a Chemical Peel, why shouldn’t I exfoliate when my skin starts to flake off?

About two days after a chemical peel, your skin will start to peel and flake. This peeling process typically lasts another two days. During the interim, it is very tempting for all of us (myself included) to peel and pick at the pieces of skin that are starting to come off. However, it is very important that you don’t do this and that you resist the urge to pick during this time. In addition, even the use of physical exfoliators such as a scrub or your Clarisonic brush is not permissible.

The purpose of a chemical peel is to dehydrate and lift off the dead, aging and mature cells on the surface of the skin. The end result is skin that looks more refreshed, even and healthy. If you exfoliate too early (while it is still in the peeling process), you run the risk of pulling off skin that’s not ready to come off and potentially creating a scar.

Once the top layers have lifted (approximately 5 days after the procedure) it is safe and often advisable to use a scrub to help those remaining dead cells exfoliate off the surface. Many patients will even come into the office for a Silk Peel with hyaluronic acid infusion or Dermaplane procedure 1-2 weeks after their chemical peel to assist in the removal of those last few dead cells that are waiting to come off, and speed up the healing process.

I have always been a big fan of chemical peels. They do a great job refreshing tired skin and getting rid of the skin “blahs” in a relatively short amount of time with very limited downtime.

Illuminize Me! My Intro To Chemical Peels

One month ago, I had my first chemical peel. It baffles me how I had, at this point, made it 24 years without ever seeking advice from a skincare professional. My skin was blotchy, rough, and acneic on a good day.

Illuminize on Erica

You can't see the Illuminize on my skin, but you can see the healthy glow!

When I began working at this Columbus Medical Spa, a lot of my fears and preconceptions were shattered after five minutes of talking to my coworkers. For example, I used to think a “chemical peel” involved some mysterious scalding acid that boiled off your top layer of skin. I imagined ending up a tarry blob of liquid on the floor like when Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit meets his demise in a vat of “killer dip”.

Well, let me be the first to say, it’s nothing like that at all!

Because I do have rather sensitive skin, Kate decided to give me an Illuminize Peel, which is the lightest of our SkinMedica peels. I reclined and listened to soothing music as she washed my face and prepped it with a solution to ensure my skin had the appropriate pH. As she slowly applied the peel, she avoided certain areas like the corners of my mouth and around my eyes, where potential dryness could be irritating.

Once the peel was on my face, my skin began to tingle and feel warm, as if I were blushing. In the mirror, I could see that my skin had a nice “flushed” look.

After a few minutes, I noticed that I did get pretty red in the areas where she had applied the peel, but that subsided quickly.

When you get a chemical peel, you want to leave it on for a few hours. Because the Illuminize is so light, I left it on overnight and washed it off the next morning with my hands and a mild cleanser (SkinMedica’s, actually).

My skin immediately had a great glow to it! The next day there was some mild peeling on my chin and lower cheek, which I could really only see when I was inches from the mirror.

The next week, my skin continued to clear up. The blemishes that were soon to be in bloom before the peel had now come to the surface much smaller than I had anticipated, and in two days they disappeared completely.

So would I do it again? Yes!

I see many peels in my future, especially since I know that just one yields good results, but a series of peels yields great results. My confidence has been boosted, my face feels fresh and young, and I feel Illuminized.

Kristy’s Chemical Peel Experience

When it comes to chemical peels I have always thought Samantha Jones from Sex and the City and her crazy red face.

For those of you who watched the show, you know what I am talking about. With the image of Samantha in my head, I had serious concerns—maybe even fears—about getting a chemical peel. I was relieved to learn that, while there are peels that can leave you looking like this, there are also milder peels that do a great job of freshening up the skin. Here’s what I experienced during my peel:

While Allyson applied the peel solution to my skin, I experienced a slight burning sensation. This was followed by itchy skin for several hours later. I took a Zantac, yes the medicine for heartburn, to stop the itching. My skin was pink the day I received the peel, but the following day my skin looked pretty normal. Day 3 and 4 my skin was peeling and flaking, but looked fine as long as I kept a bit of moisturizer on it. The key is to have a moisturizer that does not irritate the skin at this point. I used SkinMedica’s TNS Ceramide Cream. I am now on Day 5 and my skin is glowing and radiant. The mild discomfort was beyond worth it and I plan to make chemical peels part of my overall skin care plan.

Pearl Vs. Fraxel

This has been an exciting two months with the Pearl laser running constantly in our office. The Pearl is for patients with unwanted brown spots, uneven pigment, hormonal skin changes, texture problems, and/or facial lines around the mouth and eyes.

People sometimes call to inquire about Fraxel, which we do not offer in our office. Here’s why:

Fraxel and other fractionated technology can take four to five treatments to see results. With the Pearl, you will see results within the week after your first treatment. You will only need one treatment, and—while there are three to four days of down-time associated with this laser—the results are outstanding.

When you come in for your Pearl treatment, you will have a topical numbing cream applied, followed by an activation period of about 45 minutes. The actual laser treatment takes only twenty minutes. Visit our Vimeo page for videos on the Pearl. And don’t forget to bring a hat to wear on your way home, as your skin will be very sensitive to sunlight.

After the first three days, you will see fresh, new skin emerging. For four weeks following the treatment, you will notice continuous improvement. So when thinking about a Fraxel procedure, be sure to consider the Pearl as an alternative.
